The
Ethnic Dance and Theatre Company (A Cia. Etnica de Dança e Teatro)
was created in October 1994 by Carmen Luz and Zenaide Djadillê both
former dancers, choreographers, theater directors and actresses. Since 1997,
they have developed a social project that fulfills the cultural and artistic
needs for the people in the communities in Morro de Andaraí and nearby
northern areas of Rio de Janeiro. There are two fundamental bases they pursue:
First, the research in contemporary dance language that includes visual arts,
video, digital cinema, theatrical experimentation, anthropology and philosophy.
Second, the incentive to form new public works, creating artistic and financial
developments for the children and teenagers that participates in the program.
The inspirations for their creative, technical and ethic work comes from the
urban day by day customs and it’s political implications, cultural history,
the legacies from the popular and erudite afro-Brazilian, South American Indian,
Oriental and European cultures and their identification, and mix of different
traditions.
